Just one more….Mile

I would walk a mile if I were called upon to help a friend or even a total stranger who was in need.

Lending a helping hand, watching children during an emergency, sitting by their bedside, just being there when needed…at one time or another, nearly everyone has had that experience.  A friend in need is the one you would gladly walk that mile, or more to be with.

At one time, it was not uncommon to give a neighbor or friend a hand, no one gave it a second thought.  This may be where the term going the extra mile came from.

But over the past fifty or sixty years, as we have spread out from the family neighborhoods we grew up in, we often do not know who our neighbors are.  Yet in times of disaster, floods or emergencies, we come together and neighborhoods are formed and sometimes reformed.

Today, with modern technology, we tweet and text more then we talk.  We have friends we have never met in person, only on social network sites or through email.  Yet these are also friends, and a kind word or email can do a lot to lift spirits, cause a smile, or a good laugh.

Then, walking that mile is such a short distance; you are there before you realize you have walked it.  So, the next time you have a friend in need of a good word, a smile or a shoulder to cry on, go the distance…walk the mile. Someday, you may need someone to walk a mile for you.

Caring and giving someone else also makes us feel good. In the scheme of things, I think many would do the same. Thanks for your appreciation.
